What are Eating Disorders?
 
  • oEating Disorders are diseases that affect a person’s metal and physical health
  • oMost common – Anorexia and Bulimia
  • oIn the US, as many as 10 million females and 1 million males are fighting a life and death battle with an ED
 
What is Anorexia?
 
  • oAnorexia Nervosa is an eating disorder that keeps its victim from reaching/maintaining his or her proper body weight.
  • oVictim typically weighs 85% of necessary weight for that person’s age, height, and sex.
  • oDiet change is not an option for victims as they fear any weight gain.
  • o5 to 10% of people with Anorexia die to starvation or other medical complications brought on by malnutrition.
  • oFound predominantly in women but can also affect men
  • oMen who are preoccupied with shape and weight can develop eating disorders
 
What is Bulimia?
 
  • oBulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder involving binge eating (eating a lot of food over a short period of time)
  • oVictims try drastic methods such as drugs and excessive exercise to compensate for overeating
  • oThe episodes occur 2 or three times a week, and one cycle lasts over three months
  • o9 out of 10 victims are women
 
What is Anorexia?
 
  • o40% of newly identified cases of anorexia are in girls 15-19 years old.
  • oSignificant increase in incidence of anorexia from 1935 to 1989 especially among young women 15-24.
  • oA rise in incidence of anorexia in young women 15-19 in each decade since 1930.
  • oThe incidence of bulimia in 10-39 year old women TRIPLED between 1988 and 1993.
  • oOnly one-third of people with anorexia in the community receive mental health care.
  • oOnly 6% of people with bulimia receive mental health care.
  • oThe majority of people with severe eating disorders do not receive adequate care.
 
What causes EDs?
 
  • oPsychological
  • oInterpersonal
  • oSocial Factors
  • oGenetic
  • oBiochemical
  • o
  • oA combination of these factors often causes a person to develop an Eating Disorder.
 
 
 
What are the problems associated with ED?
 
  • oVictims experience higher rates of depression
  • oControl over temper may decrease substantially
  • oDental decay
  • oDehydration
  • oBulimia – damage to throat/glands
 
 
How EDs be cured?

Anorexia

 
 
To cure anorexia there are three phases:
 
 
  • oRestore all the weight lost due to destructive diets.
  • oReinforce the victim’s positive self esteem and help them to feel good about their self image.
  • oCreate a long term program in order to ensure a full recovery.

Bulimia

  • Eliminate binge eating and other destructive habits
  • oReinforce the victim’s positive self esteem and help them to feel good about their self image
  • oCreate a long term program in order to ensure a full recovery
 
 
How EDs be cured?

General

  • Healthy diet
  • oExercise
  • oIndividual therapy
  • oFamily/group therapy
  • oMedications (SSRIs)
 
 
 
How can we prevent Eating Disorders?
 
  • oBecome a critical viewer of the media
  • oImages and messages in the media are not reflections of reality, but attempts to sell products
  • oRecognize and defy pressures to be thin
  • oExpand definition of beauty
  • oHelp victims to help themselves
 
 
 
 
What can I do?

  • oIf you are worried about a friend’s eating habits or attitude toward food:
  • oExpress concerns in a supportive way
  • oSet a time to talk early on
  • oUse specific examples
  • oSuggest help
  • oListen
  • oDon’t say: "If you'd just stop, then everything would be fine!"
