How Can IA Students Avoid the use of Marijuana

Marijuana is one of the most abused drugs in America. It is present in almost every high school, so almost every student will be exposed to marijuana in some way or another through their high school career. For this reason, we as a group want to teach our fellow classmates how to avoid the usage of marijuana. As stated before marijuana is present in almost every high school including the IA, so the majority of students here will be exposed to marijuana. With this presentation we intend to further explain how to avoid marijuana, affective treatments, and affects of marijuana.

Affects of Marijuana

Most IA students do not precept the health hazards and long time effects of using marijuana. One of the major affect of marijuana is that it will lower your capability to learn, concentrate, and your capability to memorize for a period of days or weeks. There is a difference between people who abuse the drug everyday and people who only use it once in a while. People who use marijuana daily will experience decrease in their intellectual level at all times. Another affect of this drug is that the more one uses it, their stress level increases dramatically, which will affect one's performance in school.

In the picture above it is clearly depicted that the Cannabis (Marijuana) User's

brainactivity is less and the brain's size is phisically smaller.

The fact that marijuana is often not considered addictive by most people, is incorrect. Frequent users who are addicted to marijuana experience irritations, sleeplessness, decreased appetite, and drug craving. Being addicted also affects ones social life. One loses interest in family, school, and any physical activities. Marijuana also affects the heart by increasing the heart rate from 20-100% which leads to a greater risk of having a heart attack. This can last up to 3 hours after abusing marijuana.

When one uses cannabis one will most likely smoke it. To achieve a “high” the smoker will hold the smoke in as long as possible. Marijuana has more carcinogens in it than tobacco which means it is more harmful to the lungs so that one is more likely to form cancer cells in the lungs than tobacco user. Marijuana also lowers ones immune system and therefore increase the chance of getting sick and missing school.

Treatment

One option for treatment for people who want to quiet using marijuana is joining a counseling group in which there are about ten to twelve people in it. This group meets a few times a week to discuss methods to stop using marijuana and the problems they are having to avoid marijuana. This is a new technique that so far has been rather affective. There is also medicine to help users stop. This is also an affective method to help users stop smoking. One of these medications is called Acomplia. Yet this specific medication has not been approved in the USA. The way it works is that it blocks the “high” when smoking marijuana.
