Sexual Harassment is defined as
"Harassment that can happen anywhere but is most common in the workplace, and schools. It involves unwanted and unwelcome, words, deeds, actions, gestures, symbols, or behaviors of a sexual nature that make the target feel uncomfortable. Gender and sexual orientation harassment fall into this family."
Recognition:
The different types of sexual harrasment are
Visual Harassment: dirty pictures, sexual gestures, suggestive letters or email and obscene graffiti.
Verbal Harassment: sexual names and jokes, ccomments about one's body, rumors about sexual activity, sexual intimidation, or sexual noises or sounds.
Physical Harassment: touching, groping, pulling on clothes, shaking, blocking, rubbing up against someone, hugging, or any other type of unwanted touching.
"Traffic Light" Inference:
Green Light: Normal Behavior
Yellow Light: Borderline Behavior such as Hugging
Red Light: Deliberate unwelcome touching such as slapping someone on the back of the head or any of the examples above.
Where can it happen?
Sexual harassment can happen anywhere. It can happen even when you are on the internet. Over 10 million people are subjected to Sexual harassment online. For example, people who play Halo or any other online game where there is verbal communiation are subject to verbal sexual harassment and even might commit it without knowing, such as "tea bagging." Knowing what is sexual harassment can help prevent it from spreading to other people.
Is bullying considered sexual harassment?
Yes, bullying is considered sexual harassment. Since bullying is defined as "the act of intimidating a weaker person to make them do something" by the Princeton WordNet, the act of intimidation is achieved through a form of sexual harassment, such as hitting the other person, which is "unwanted touching", or through verbal abuse.
Prevention:
1. Conduct yourself well with self-confidence
This does not mean you have to be mean to people you meet. This means you have to not show weakness and act like you know who you are and what you stand for.
2. Be modest in your dressing/grooming
Do not under dress or dress revealing, this will decrease the changes of a person to Sexually Harass you.
3. Watch your associates!
Be careful, Make sure no one is watching you or trying to doing things to you.
4. Avoid compromising situations.
Places where Sexual Harassment occurs:
Sexual Harassment occurs in many places.
At school it occurs in gym, on the school bus and when kids change classes. It can also happen in class when the teacher is not looking.
Who Reports Sexual Harassment:
Both males and females report sexual harassment equally but girls and sexual minorities were more upset by it.
